Weekly Listens, #1

I listen to a lot of podcasts – a lot! – and so I thought it might be fun to start a new series rounding up what I’ve listened to recently. In this first edition, a look into utopian societies throughout history, an interview with Andrew Yang on his platform as a presidential candidate, and jokes flying everywhere between John Mulaney and Conan O’Brien.

Jamestown: Utopia for Whom (38:06) – Nice Try!

The true story behind Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America, and what really happened between Pocahontas and John Smith (it’s definitely not the Disney version we all know).

Why Is This Man Running for President? (1:00:15) – Freakonomics Radio

I was meh on Andrew Yang before but this episode really sold me on him – very intelligent guy who genuinely wants to get out there and improve the world.

Chandigarh: The Modernist Utopia (36:47) – Nice Try!

After the India/Pakistan partition in 1947, the Indian prime minister wanted to turn the city of Chandigarh into a utopia to signal India’s rise on the world stage. But while he hired the most famous architects of his day, the plans never took off and now we even see Chandigarh’s chairs in Kourtney Kardashian’s home.

Marriage Story (16:29) – Pop Culture Happy Hour

I’ve heard pretty mixed reviews about this movie, but the panel here made me cautiously optimistic. I’ll probably stream it in the background at some point while I’m doing something else.

John Mulaney (1:05:21) – Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend

Conan’s podcast is one of my favorites ever. I’m also a huge fan of John Mulaney (and once saw him live at Comedy Cellar here in NYC!!) but this wasn’t a very meaty episode, I felt. Still had some laughs though.

Grace Interviews Becca! Decorating Her Apartment, The Term ‘Influencer’, and Freelance Life (1:21:46) – Bad on Paper

Love this podcast! It’s focused on books but the two hosts are great friends and I love hearing them talk with each other about anything under the sun. This week, Grace asked Becca Instagram-sourced questions from their followers.

Do you guys listen to any of these? Are there any podcasts you recommend? I’m always looking for more!
